DataDomain Operating System – Scaleable, Fast and Ultra Safe Operating Environment
Data Domain’s Operating System (DD OS) Software has revolutionized disk Backup, network Disaster Recovery and remote office data protection with high-speed, inline data deduplication and consistent, integrated system management tools.
DD OS enables the world’s simplest approach to going tapeless for operational recovery.
Enterprise Protection Storage
The Data Domain Operating System is fast, simple and safe software the powers the Data Domain systems for disk backup and network-based disaster recovery.
At the core of DD OS is Data Domain’s patented Global Compression technology and Data Invulnerability Architecture, which ensure maximum data reduction and continuous recovery verification.
Massive Data Reduction
DD OS offers the most aggressive inline data reduction available for backup/recovery data averaging 20x data reduction. As data is written to the Data Domain system, it is quickly scanned for patterns that have been stored before. Global Compression looks for large patterns across the history of all data stored in the Data Domain file system. DD OS stores each unique data sequence only once and saves significant physical storage capacity by substituting small references for each identical redundant sequence.
Local compression scans the unique data sequence for small strings across a local small window of comparison, like a tape drive.
The combination of both deduplication and compression provides the resulting optimized data reduction.
Scalable Data Protection
DD OS supports petabytes of protection storage for a typical enterprise data set and backup policy. Over 20 PB of logical storage is available in the DDX Array for long-term disk-based retention. Multiple months of retention to disk is now possible using the same number of “floor tiles” that would normally provide only a couple days of disk staging.
Highest Throughput Data Reduction
The DD OS provides modular scalable throughput to minimize backup and recovery times. When deployed with the DDX high performance system architecture, the DDX offers up to 12.8 TB/hour of backup or restore speed. The appliance and Gateway Series offer hundreds of GB/hour of throughput, significantly exceeding LTO-3 performance. Modular scalability enables simple expandability as your business challenges grow.
Ultra-Safe Backup Storage for Reliable Recovery
DD OS includes extra levels of data protection to protect itself against storage related faults that threaten data recoverability. Dual disk parity RAID (DD RAID or RAID 6) is part of the foundation for DD OS continuous fault detection and healing. DD RAID protects against up to two simultaneous disk faults, can rebuild a failed disk even if there are read errors on other sectors, and can detect and correct errors on-the-fly during reads. This added protection ensures successful data restore operations and the highest levels of data availability.
Uniqueness Verification
In determining global uniqueness, DD OS leverages very strong cryptographic hashing for speed and security, but it does not stop there. A universal hash ensures against random and malicious hash collisions. A separate independent algorithm for verification ensures early warning in the event of a challenge and adds additional data protection.
Easily Integrates into Existing Infrastructures
DD OS presents itself as a file server, offering NFS, CIFS or NDMP access over Ethernet or as a Virtual Tape Library (VTL) over fibre channel, or both. Increasingly, backup software is taking advantage of file servers or VTLs as optimized disk backup stores because they are so simple to manage and access. This deployment flexibility enables IT organizations to rapidly adjust to changing business requirements.
DD OS is qualified with all leading enterprise backup software and other business-critical applications.
Local and Multi-Site Data Protection
Once you backup a Data Domain system running DD OS, it is easy and cost-effective to use the system for local retention and limit the use of tape to providing offsite and archive support. DD OS protects your data with offsite WAN vaulting support, provides remote offices data protection and enables multi-site tape consolidation.
Data Domain systems vault only the deduplicated and compressed unique changes across any IP network using up to 99% less bandwidth. It facilitates a copy of the entire retained backup data set, online and disaster-protected. If multiple systems replicate to the same destination mode, the destination will only store each segment uniquely across all inbound replication streams, further minimizing bandwidth and storage.
The Data Domain Replicator software option vaults only the deduplicated and compressed unique changes across any IP network using a tiny fraction of the bandwidth required by normal replication. It facilitates a copy of the entire retained backup data set, online and disaster-protected. If multiple systems replicate to the same destination mode, the destination will only store each segment uniquely across all inbound replication streams, further minimizing bandwidth.
Operational Simplicity
Because of DD OS, Data Domain systems are very simple to install and manage, Administrators can access DDOS through command line over SSH or through Data Domain Enterprise Manager, a browser-based graphical user interface. Initial configuration and configuration updates can easily be made for multiple systems along with monitoring of system states and the state of system operations. Simple script-ability along with SNMP monitoring provides additional management flexibility.
All Data Domain systems have an automatic call-home system reporting feature, called Autosuppoprt, which provides email notification on complete system status to Data Domain and to a selected list of administrators. This non-intrusive alerting and data collection capability enables proactive support and service without administrator intervention further simplifying ongoing management.
Data Domain Replicator Software
WAN Vaulting of Enterprise Backup Data
Secure, Simple and Affordable WAN Vaulting
Using Data Domain Replicator, enterprises can now vault or asynchronously replicate selected business critical data from one system over the WAN to a secure off-site location.
Data Domain Replicator significantly reduces the data sent to remote locations by vaulting only new and unique data segments in compressed format. And it happens automatically as data is stored, thereby allowing backup administrators to focus on other critical functions.
WAN vaulting, enabled by massive data reduction, eliminates the security risk associated with human intervention and physical transportation. Using networks to move backup data offsite for DR is now economical and operationally feasible.
Cuts Network Bandwidth Utilization up to 99%
Data Domain Global Compression technology massively reduces data volume stored in a given Data Domain system, resulting in a data reduction rate of 20x average.
In WAN vaulting, Data Domain Replicator performs two levels of bandwidth reduction. The first level is the result of local data reduction in the originating restorer. Typically less than 1% of a full backup is actually new, unique compressed sequences. That is all that has to be sent over a WAN.
The second level is the result of cross-site deduplication when multiple sites replicate to the same destination restorer. The Data Domain restorer, acting as a destination for other sites, negotiates with the originators to minimize bandwidth by deduplicating across all backup replication streams and all local backups. Here, Global Compression is “global” across the entire vaulting network. Unique compressed segments previously transferred by any remote site, or held in local backup, are used in the deduplication process to further improve network efficiency by reducing the data to be vaulted.
Local and Multi-Site Data Protection
Once vaulted across the WAN, data can be recovered or duplicated to tape from the Data Domain protection storage system at either location. If there is a problem with the onsite originating system, a backup server can access the replicated data over the WAN to get key information back onsite quickly.
Site-to-site bidirectional vaulting provides added disaster protection, allowing each site to store local backups while serving as the secure recovery site for the other location. All Data Domain systems can simultaneously host local backups and host replicated images from other sites.
Data Domain Replicator software provides intelligent remote replication for globally distributed enterprises. Multiple geographically distributed branch offices can simultaneously vault selected backup data to a central hub enabling a flexible, enterprise-wide site recovery model.
Cross-site deduplication further improves network efficiency by eliminating the need toe transfer common data already received. Remote office backup and recovery can now be achieved orders of magnitude faster, cheaper, more securely and reliably than with tape technologies.
Easy Integration into Existing Infrastructures
Tape handling is unreliable, insecure and labor-intensive. Data Domain Replicator is designed to work with all leading enterprise backup software. No changes are required to the backup policies or the network and no complex management is required.
Additional deployment flexibility exists with vaulting support for backup data simultaneously stored through NFS, CIFS and on virtual cartridges through the Data Domain Virtual Tape Library option. By using WANs and automated data movement, the process is brought to the level of efficiency and effectiveness IT expects from every other component in a data center.
